We all may dream of draping fabric on a chair, and with a few rips, pins, nips tucks and stitches, a perfect slipcover magically appears in just a wee bit of time. However, the reality is that this scenario has a good chance of ending in tears and an ill fitting cover. Sometimes, drafting a flat pattern for slipcovers is called for, and I call this scenario "making a muslin for a chair dress". After all, slipcovering and dressmaking are kissing cousins! This week I had the opportunity to facilitate a hands on learning and sharing experience for my friends and members of the Triangle WCAA. Thank you to Sandra and Cathy for assisting as floating instructors! Also special thanks to a great friend and mentor - and expert apparel flat pattern designer - Debra for encouraging me to teach this class and for loading all the coffee cups into my dishwasher a the end of the day. Taking time out to wish Tammy a happy birthday! Cake was designed by Jamesa (special delivery by Bianca) and the icing on the cake matched Tammy's earrings perfectly. Photo credit to Janet. Donations were accepted for Make-a-Wish! Feels good to pay it forward. Hopefully everyone will be inspired to make a chair dress real soon!
I've been counting down and it's time. My six week break officially begins September 1. So how will I spend my time during the break? I will spend more time with my family. And I will contemplate my place in the universe on an island. OCRACOKE ISLAND And I will attend the Couture Sewing School in Baltimore. SUSAN KHALJE Fashion enthusiasts travel from all around the world to attend. Six intensive days are devoted to creating a garment using the couture techniques and details Susan uses in her exquisite designs. Now I must choose a project and begin sketching out designs. Off to the drawing board. Still unpacking from the slipcover demonstrations at the Furniture Festival! It takes a lot of tools to make a slipcover. Also brought home a few souvenirs. Someday I'd like to be a professional tourist. Woven-Stones
Getting ready for the Furniture Festival! I'll be participating with slipcoveristas Emily Pettit & Kristi Maxwell This week I had just the most fun ever hunting at High Point Market here in NC. And was so excited to come across this little miniature furniture exhibit. Slipcovers for small scale furniture could be on the horizons. But most of my day at High Point was spent touching and feeling anything covered in cottons and linens, and I think I nailed a few more offerings for my custom cotton and linen slipcover line. I would say the highlight of my day was digging around the Antique and Design Center at Market Square and discovering a Vintage Fabric Vendor with a serious investment in old linens and cotton print, and bolts and bolts of potato sack cloth. |
